Amazon Rainforest Fish
Rainforests contain some of the most diverse and unique animals on earth. From majestic birds to strange plants and fungi, the atmosphere of a rainforest is home to many interesting creatures that are found nowhere else on the planet. In no area is this more evident than in a rainforest's aquatic life, which is made up of many different amphibians and fish.
In fact, there are more species of fish in the Amazon River alone, than in the entire Atlantic Ocean! Much of the rainforest's biodiversity can be attributed to the many different canopy layers of the rainforest.
Perhaps one of the best known fish of the rainforest is the piranha. Piranhas are often depicted in cartoons and movies as fish that eat humans, due to their very sharp teeth and their hunger for meat. The piranha lives in the freshwater rivers of South America, primarily in the Amazon Basin. While the fish occasionally attack humans, this generally only occurs when water levels are low. In addition to being a meat-eater, piranhas also eat different plants and vegetation that grows in their river homes, making them an omnivorous fish.
In addition to infamous fish like the piranha, the rainforest was originally home to many of the different species found in home aquariums. Freshwater fish such as the Angelfish are found in the river systems of South America, and have become one of the most popular freshwater fish in the world. Another popular freshwater fish, the neon tetra, was originally discovered in parts of Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. The tetra is now bred heavily in captivity for the pet trade.
Beyond the rainforests of South America, many varieties of fish are found in the Asian rainforests. One of the most well-known is the Siamese fighting fish, which is also known as a betta. These flamboyant, colorful fish belong to the genus Betta, which contains many other species of fish which are similar to the Siamese fighting fish. Many of these fish come from Cambodia and Thailand, where they dwell in shallow ponds and rice paddies. The fish are mainly carnivorous, and in the wild they eat insect larvae and zooplankton.
Another popular freshwater fish that comes from the rainforest is known as the clown loach. The clown loach is from Indonesia, and takes its name from its very colorful body. The clown loach is also a very “entertaining” fish, as it will exhibit behaviors that most other fish do not. For example, the clown loach is known to play dead, and will also swim upside down from time to time.
The rainforest is home to many more species of exotic fish, and its diversity makes it one of the most important places on earth. The many different fish who call the rainforest home are truly some of the most interesting in the world. The many different animals and plants living in the rainforest are one of the most prolific reasons for protecting these lands from destruction through processes such as deforestation.
